Skin, Science and Sjogren’s: An interview with Dr. Lobo (A Chemist and Nutritional Biologist)

Sjögren’s (SHOW-grins) is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease that affects the entire body. According to the National Institute of Health, an estimated 4 million Americans are affected and mostly women. The condition affects parts of your body that produce fluids like the mucous membranes and moisture-secreting glands of your eyes and mouth (tears, spit) are usually affected first — resulting in decreased tears, saliva, dry eyes and a dry mouth but other serious complications include profound fatigue, chronic pain, neuropathies,  lymphomas, and major organ involvement with lungs, kidneys, and nervous system. The condition often accompanies other immune system disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Sjögren’s can have similar symptoms as fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome so it hard to reach a diagnosis but please don’t give up on addressing your concerns.
